Fleet
Week October 10-13, 1997
Fleet Week is the Bay Area's annual salute to the men and women of
our nation's marine services. PIER
39 and the entire San Francisco port community celebrates the
U.S. Navy's birthday with a variety of aquatic activities, air show,
and special performances by various Navy bands. PIER 39 serves as
Fleet Week headquarters and information center, as well as the perfect
place to view the Blue Angels' dynamic air show on Saturday and Sunday
above the San Francisco Bay.
Our family took the 11 AM Sausalito ferry to PIER 41 and was
greeted with a great view of huge Navy ships cruising the bay with
an aircraft carrier launching fighters off its deck. An
awe-inspiring sight! After we arrived we were amazed to find that
we were part of a crowd that had to number into the hundreds of thousands.
After watching a number of air shows and taking time for lunch we
took up position on PIER 40 to best view the Blue Angels. To put in
into one word "WOW." This is a show everyone should experience
at least once!
